Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

Q: When should I apply for the program?
A: Now! We take applications up until April 1st, but you receive great program discounts if you apply early. Camp places fill up quickly and applying early gives you the maximum choice of camps with which we work. However, we do always have some late openings – so if you don't make your final decision until closer to your departure date we can still help you.

Q: Will I need to take out travel insurance?
A: 2 months of CCUSA travel insurance is included in the program  fees to cover you for the duration of your employment with the summer camps. This insurance can be extended if you wish to travel and/or work further in Canada after camp has finished. Please contact your local office for details of cost.

Q: Where should I book my flights?
A: Contact CCUSA to find out about our great deals and preferred Travel Agent partners.

Q: Do I need my Canadian Working Holiday Visa to Apply?
A: No, you don't need you to have your visa to apply. We will assist you in obtaining your visa before you depart for camp.

Q: How do I get started?
A: Complete the online application form, then print out the complete and return form and send it in to us with two passport photos and your application fee. We will then contact you to arrange your interview.

Q: Why do I want to go through CCUSA?
A: Making arrangements to work at a camp is challenging. The visa can be confusing, it is difficult to find camps that are willing to hire international staff and it is challenging to determine which camps will provide the necessary support and benefits to help you succeed at camp. CCUSA will provide you with a face-to-face interview and a pre-arranged camp placement, which we think will suit your skills, personality and what you hope to get out of your summer adventure! In addition, our partner company, NYQUEST, will help you get settled in Canada and provide support and emergency assistance during your work placement.

Q: Can I specify a particular skill area in which I want to work?
A: Yes – you can certainly tell the interviewer that you want to work in a certain skill area. However, bear in mind that camp directors make the final staffing decisions and, whilst you may be convinced that tennis is your strongest skill area, they may think that your experience in arts & crafts would be more valuable. We recommend that you list a preference, but prepare to be as flexible as possible. You can be hired for anything in your application.

Q: What kind of people are you looking for?
A: We are looking for people with a genuine desire to work with children, who have fluent spoken English, good health, leadership abilities and are between 20- 30 years of age. We do take 19 year olds, but they are required to have an extensive range of experience working with children or in camps, and have specialized skills.

Q: Can I go with a friend or partner?
A: You can request this option, but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate this as Camp Directors make the final hiring decisions. The earlier you apply the better your chances are.

Q: What happens if I am not offered a job?
A: If we have not placed you by June 15th you will be given a full refund of fees paid to CCUSA.

Q: What if I am offered a position I don't want?
A: Unfortunately if you are offered a position and do not wish to accept it, you will forfeit your program fee, and we will have to withdraw your application from the program.

Q: What temperatures can I expect during the summer?
A: Canadian summers are typically rather mild. Temperatures may reach 30 degree Celsius but on average, it is about 25 degrees Celsius in most of our camp locations. Please note: it does get a lot colder than this at night time.

Once In Canada

Q: What uniform is required?
A: Some camps require certain clothing while at camp; however you will be notified of this once you are placed.

Q: Will I get free time?
A: Yes, you will definitely get free time. It is important to remember that you are there to work and you will work hard. Typically staff members get at least six days off during the eight week camp session and some free time every day.

Q: What is the policy of the camps towards piercing, dyed hair, dreadlocks, and tattoos?
A: It is important to remember for both Camp Counselors and Support Staff positions that you are a role model for the children at camp. Hair must be neat. Long hair must be tied back when it is a safety issue. Jewellery should be worn in moderation and make-up should not be used at camp. Some camps will require staff to remove facial jewellery or exposed body piercing, such as tongue rings or studs. Participants may also have to cover up any tattoos whilst working at camp. Personal hygiene is important and aftershave and perfume should be kept to a minimum.

Q: What happens if I don't like it once I get there or I am fired?
A: A great deal of care is taken in matching you up with the right summer camp for you. We call it our “perfect placement” service. If you contact us to let us know you are unhappy at camp we will take steps to find out why you are unhappy and how this can be resolved. In some cases it is possible for us to arrange for you to change to another camp. (In this case you would be responsible for all related transportation costs).
