Practical Training USA Program -

facts

Practical Training USA (PTUSA) is one of the official exchange visitor programs offered by CCUSA under the auspices of the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Qualified participants may work for up to 18 months, anywhere in the United States, in a CCUSA-approved training program in the categories of Management, Finance, Commerce or Business. The training visa is NOT a long-term work visa but rather one allowing its participants to obtain practical experience and instruction in a field related to either their degree course or a present field of employment.

Most of our Trainees find their own Employers willing to offer them a training plan. However, from time to time we recruit for Employers with whom we have successful training plans already in place. We have offices in multiple countries so can target our marketing efforts or open up the position to all our country offices. Typically, employers already have a prospective trainee in mind and are willing to offer a training program in one of the approved categories. Once a trainee is located and a training plan has been submitted to CCUSA and approved, CCUSA will contact the trainee to begin the application process. Prospective Trainees can only apply for the Practical Training program through a CCUSA office in their country of citizenship. We do not accept applicants from countries where we do not have a local office.

There are no fixed starting dates for the program so the training position can start at any time of the year. The maximum length for the program is 18 months but it is also acceptable for a position to be less than 12 months. We do require at least two months before you wish the trainee to begin work, to allow for interview and visa processing time. This can some times take longer depending on how quickly a training plan is written and approved.

Practical Training Participant requirements:

  • Have a training position already arranged; or eligible and prescreened for a Direct Placement Opportunity
  • Trainee must have a degree or professional certificate from a post-secondary academic institution outside the US in the field of training or a related field, plus at least one year work experience in their occupational field outside the US OR, they must have five years work experience in their occupational field outside the US (Resumes can be pre-screened to see if a participant will qualify for this program. Send them to danaf@ccusa.com
  • Complete an application along with a signed program agreement
  • Submit two references/letter of recommendation (preferably from previous or current employers) With their application
  • Strong English skills
  • The intention to pursue, as a career, the field in which training will be held
  • Trainees are eligible for additional training programs after a period of at least two years residency outside the United States following their initial training program.

All applicants must have EXCELLENT English and the financial resources to support themselves in the USA . We recommend they have a minimum of $1500 - $2000 USD up front to cover miscellaneous expenses until they receive their first stipend and access to a credit card for emergencies. Participants planning to do an unpaid training program would have to present proof of financial resources to cover expenses during their entire program.

Employers are responsible for submitting the following information to PTUSA:

  • Employer Application
  • Training Plan
  • DS 7002 Form filled out and signed by the Supervisor of the training plan, the RO/ARO of the sponsoring agency (Marielle Fagersten, Janice Haigh or Dana Welch)
  • Employer Letter of Agreement
  • Employment Agreement (document to be signed by trainee at interview)
  • Once Training Plan is approved, Employer to fill out the DS 7002 Form for the State Department outlining the program and each phase of training. This form needs to be signed by the Supervisor of the training plan, the RO/ARO of the sponsoring agency (Dana Welch, Marielle Fagersten, or Janice Haigh) and the trainee.

Training Plan Requirements

The training plan should detail the position being offered, what skills will be learned, how the training is going to be accomplished, who will supervise the trainee, and what method of training will be used (ie: hands on training, seminars, conferences, shadowing, etc). It should also detail the position being offered, salary (if any) and how the training will be evaluated as well. The plan must include rationale for why the training must be done in the US - as opposed to the applicant's home country. Programs should be broken down in chronological order and into segments of no more than three months or four months. It should be as detailed as possible and must be typed.
